Jonas And McFadden Return To The O's For the First Time In Ninety Six Years!
A unique and poignant occasion took place at the O's on Saturday.
With the Orient playing at home on Remembrance weekend it gave the opportunity for the club to pay it's respects to the players, staff and supporters of Clapton Orient who served their country in the Great War. No less than forty one joined up into the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment which was more commonly known as The Footballers' Battalion.
Three Clapton Orient players gave up their lives on the Somme in 1916 - William Jonas, Richard McFadden and George Scott and many other players sustained wounds, some more than once with O's 'keeper Jimmy Hugall getting wounded on three seperate occasions including once in the eye, and yet he returned to playing for the Orient when football resumed after the war.
Leyton Orient Supporters Club Deputy Chairman Steve Jenkins who organised the Act of Remembrance on the pitch at half-time was extremely proud to have with him for the day members of William Jonas' and Richard McFadden's family for this special occasion. Karen Plewes, Doreen and Michael Jonas travelled down from Gateshead on the Friday before the game and met up with Mary Jaggs and Nicky Hammett from Birchanger near Stansted in Essex. Both families were introduced to everyone in the Supporters Cub after the O's 2-1 victory where they were presented with an framed A2 montage commemorating the lives of the three O's players lost on the Somme along with an A3 framed print of the O's memorial in Flers. This was the first occasion for ninety six years that the families had met up - the first since the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
